my poor baby...

Lilly ended up being admitted to the hospital on Sunday November 20th.  She woke up from nap on Friday running a high fever (103 degrees)and complaining of a sore throat. She also complained of a stiff neck which scared me.  We decided to take her to the minor emergency clinic since this was after regular dr. hours.  While in the waiting room she vomited.  She vomited twice in the exam room.  The PA that saw her thought that she had tonsillitis and gave us a prescription. She didn't do much that evening.  She didn't eat anything and barely drank any juice.  For those of you that know my Lilly know something is wrong if she won't take her juice!  We put her to bed hoping that she would feel better in the morning.  When she woke up on Saturday, her fever was still high (103).  I called the dr. and they said to keep pushing fluids and that they she would be ok.  Her fever broke a couple of times during the day, but would always return.  It seemed to keep rising every time it returned.  At one point it reached 104 deg.  Sunday morning she still had the high fever and hadn't urinated in a couple of days.  I called my friend Crystal (Dr. Strong's nurse) and asked her if she agreed with what the other nurse on call for the Dr.'s office was telling me.  She said that she was going to call up at the office and talk to Dr. smith and tell him he needed to see Lilly.  We were able to get in that day (Sunday) at 1:00, and as soon as Dr. Smith saw her he sent us over to the hospital.  He said she as severely dehydrated and would need to be put on iv fluids for a couple of hours and have a few labs drawn.  He also ordered a urine sample.  Since she was so dehydrated they had to do a straight cath on my poor girl.  He didn't think that they would have to keep her over night. That evening Dr. Smith returned with the news that Lilly would be spending the night.  Her labs showed a pretty severe infection and that she was severely dehydrated.  She also continued to run a high temperature (still 104 or higher).  He put her on iv rocephin and continued with the LR.  Lilly was really upset about this decision because I had made the BIG mistake of telling her that we were going home.  I stayed at the hospital with her and Jeremy went home with Trinity.  That night was filled with nurses and cna's coming in with medicine and taking vitals.  The next morning her regular pedi, Dr. Strong stopped by to tell us that the rest of the labs had come back with no distinct results.  He wanted them to draw more blood and do some cultures with it.  He also ordered an x-ray to make sure that she didn't have pneumonia.  He was pretty irritated with the minor emergency clinic, because they started Lilly on an antibiotic before doing a swab of her throat to check for strep.  He said that once you start an antibiotic tx you can no longer swab for strep so now we won't know for sure if that is what she has.  He said that he needed a urine sample and once all of the labs came back he would stop by to talk to us.  I decided to go home and clean up after Jeremy made it back up to the hospital to sit with Lilly.  Apparently while I was gone Jeremy accidentally pulled on Lilly's iv and almost yanked it out!  He felt horrible!  He was so worried that they were going to have to stick her again. (it took them about 15 minutes to get the first iv and they had to stick her twice for blood)  Lilly cried when the nurse entered the room to try to save the site.  She kept telling Jeremy, "Daddy I don't want anymore pokies!! No more pokiescath her again.  Throughout the day, the nurse kept coming in and checking for a sample, but my Lilly wasn't about to part with her urine.  Finally, around noon she relinquished and filled the hat for us. I called the nurse and told her that we had success.  She told me that she was glad that Lilly finally did it because Dr. Strong had just called up to the floor again and said that they needed to straight cath her to get one.  He also had ordered another x-ray.  He said that he wanted an x-ray of her tummy, because the last one that they did showed an excessive amount of gas in her gut. (Lilly has a history of tummy problems and he had already sent us to a GI specialist in Lubbock back in Aug. to try to figure out what was going on.) This time they used the portable x-ray so Lilly was a little more comfortable with it.  That evening, Dr. Strong came to the room and told us that all the labs and cultures had come back negative and since she hadn't spiked a fever all day we could take he HOME!!!  He told us that he was going to send the results from the x-rays to her GI specialist and see what he wanted us to do next.

The child specialist in the hospital brought Lilly this dvd player and a few toys to play with.  We were glad to have the dvd player to play her Mickey Mouse movies on because all the room had was an old vhs player that didn't work very well.
 Lilly and her chipmunks!
This is from the last day we were there (tuesday nov. 23)  she was feeling so much better! especially after they took her iv out!
